A free credit report is simply a record of an individual person’s borrowing and repaying money. It even tracks the history of late payments and bankruptcy. This brings forth the term “credit reputation” and means the same as credit history, or a credit score.

In the United States, a customer fills out a credit application from a bank, or even a credit card company. The applicant’s credit report will be forwarded to the credit bureau, which then matches the individual’s identifying information such as name and address. Information that the credit bureau has is used by lenders like banks and credit card companies is used to determine credit worthiness. It’s almost a statement of “will this guy pay us back?”. Your credit report is used to deem you worthy of loans and much more.

Another deciding factor in getting a loan from a lender is the income that individual makes. The more the individual makes, the higher chance a lender will want to loan money to the individual, judging by past payment history.

A free credit report is available, these factors help lenders determine if they can extend credit and on what terms.

The Canadian Government offers free literature titled “Understanding Your Credit Report and Credit Score“. It gives some pretty good sample credit report and credit score documents that explain all of the codes and notations that a credit report would use. As well as all that good stuff, it also has info on how to improve and build credit history, and how to detect identity theft.
